Turkey Shoot FAQ

What is a Turkey Shoot?

In our case, it is a night of raffles.  Parts of 50 turkey dinners (including turkeys, bag of vegetables, pies, cider and candy) will be raffled off, as well as a variety of themed gift baskets that are raffled separately.  And there might be something to surprise you! In the past, the event has also included a silent auction for some more valuable prizes and a limited raffle for NH lottery tickets.

What time does it start?

Doors open at 6 pm and Round 1 of the food raffle begins promptly at 6:45 pm.  The event is usually over before 9 pm.

Is there an admission fee?

No, there is no charge to attend the event.

What is the price of raffle tickets?

Tickets prices for the food raffle and the gift baskets are: 1 ticket for $1, 6 tickets for $5, 15 tickets for $10 and 40 tickets for $20.

How does the food raffle work?

Turkeys and other food items are raffled off in four rounds.  First, tickets are sold for Round 1.  During Round 1 fifty winning tickets are drawn for prizes alternating between a turkey, veggies, pie, cider or candy.  At the end of a round the old tickets are discarded and the process repeats with a completely new set of tickets being sold for the next round.   There’s no limit on winning!  Some lucky people win more than one item. Increase your chances by buying more tickets.

How does the gift basket raffle work?

Tickets for the gift basket raffle are sold separately from the food raffle, but at the same prices.  Each gift basket is assigned a number.  Put a ticket in the bag corresponding with the number on the basket(s) that you would like to win.  Basket winners are drawn at the close of the evening and you must be present to win.

May children attend this event?

Children are welcome to attend with an adult.  Games and coloring activities are set up on the side of the room for our younger attendees.

Are refreshments available?

Yes, for the last several years the Friends of the Library have sold sandwiches, cookies, chips and other snacks.

Who sponsors this event?

In 2014 the Friends of the Library are the event sponsors.  Half of the proceeds will stay with the Friends organization and half with be given to the Merrimack Library Development Fund.  Both are tax-exempt 501c-3 non-profit organizations.

Why call it a Turkey Shoot?

Historically, events were held during which participants would compete to shoot a turkey that they would then take home for their Thanksgiving dinner!  Nowadays, in the week before Thanksgiving turkeys are on everyone’s mind and, although there’s no shooting, the pace of the food raffles is very fast!

Please call the Library Director, Yvette Couser, at 424-5021 x 108, if you'd like more information about the event!
