House of Earth and Blood is the first in the new urban fantasy series, Crescent City, by Sarah J Maas. It is Maas’ debut of an adult series. The main character with Bryce Quinlan, a half-fae and half-human, living her best life when tragedy strikes. Time passes and tragedy strikes again, but the accused is still behind bars. Bryce finds herself thrown into the new investigation paired up with a fallen angel, Hunt Athalar. Hunt is a force of incredible strength and brutal skills, enslaved to the archangels he once attempted to overthrow. As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into the city’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear.
This is the thirteenth book I have read by Sarah J Maas. It was also the largest, but I enjoy the fantasy worlds that she creates and was willing to take on the challenge. As typical for my reading style, it took more than 100 pages to really immerse myself in this new world. With that done, and given enough uninterrupted time, I consumed the following 700 pages in 2-hour chunks. I was always disappointed to have to put the book down. The world was fleshed out with history, mythology, conflict, inequality, and all kinds of magic. The plot was full of twists and surprises. I look forward to the sequel next year! As a hopeless romantic, I’ll leave you with a quote: “Through love, all is possible”.
