Dear Library Supporters,
This Summer, the Merrimack Library beta-tested the Teen Summer Intern Squad Initiative, a 6-week long program designed to provide a unique internship opportunity for Merrimack teens. We invited local teens to apply for one of 20 spots and earn 15 community service hours and practical work experience in a safe environment while learning about the services and programs that the library offers during our Summer Reading Challenge.
Our four squads focused on four different Goals of library service:
470 Society Squad
Squad Leader: Yvette Couser, Library Director
Projects: community outreach, special projects
Teach Me 3D Squad
Squad Leader: Michele Ricca, Adult Services Aide
Projects: created an instructional and promotional video highlighting our Kossel Model A 3D Printer
Beta Battalion Squad
Squad Leader: Emily Sennott, Head of Youth Services
Projects: created educational kits of a variety of learning toys and prepared them for circulation
Book Buddies Squad
Squad Leader: Cathy Walter, Youth Services Aide
Projects: created and executed storytimes for younger patrons to develop their reading skills and a love of reading
Additionally, the program mimicked a real-world work situation by including an application process, interview, orientation, regular meetings, a performance evaluation session, a resume building workshop and finally, a conference presentation.
Teens who participated in each of the four Squads gave brief presentations that showed family, friends and community members what they learned during this experience. Each squad member shared what their favorite aspects of the experience was (learning new things about the Library, making friends, doing things that got them out of their comfort zone) and also suggested ways we can improve and grow the program for next summer (an overwhelming response to make the program longer than 6 weeks).
Teens who will be entering 7th - 12th grade in Fall 2018 who are interested in applying for the Summer 2018 Teen Summer Intern Squad Initiative are encourage to look for information this Spring. Community members who are interested in volunteering as a 2018 Squad Leader by sharing a particular skill should contact Library Director Yvette Couser at firstname.lastname@example.org or Head of Youth Services Emily Sennott at email@example.com
The Teen Summer Intern Squad Initiative Program was funded by donations from DCU, for "programs that make a difference."
