The Secret Life of Library Books

You are invited to take an inside look at library operations via the books we put on our shelves. We will begin by reviewing guidelines from the American Library Association, the NH RSAs and the library’s Collection Development Policy. Participants will learn how and why librarians select a variety of materials and about our funding sources. We will spend a day in Technical Services learning how each book gets processed once it arrives in the library and how unusual items are catalogued. From there, we'll visit the Circulation Department and discover how books are borrowed and returned, and what happens when books are worn or damaged.  We’ll examine both print and electronic materials, special kit items and speak with staff all over the library. Participants will gain skills to curate their own hypothetical dream collection on any subject of their choice.

This series was originally presented as part of our Summer Reading Teen Squad Initiative.

This year-long series will meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month.  This month's meeting will discuss Collection Development with Yvette Couser, Library Director.

Please register with an adult library card online, in person or by phone at 424-5021.
