Merrimack Public Library happily welcomes Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee, the musical duo that make up Castlebay!
Castlebay treats the audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic. Poignant ballads and robust pub songs are interspersed with evocative airs and joyous dance tunes played on Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and tin whistle. Pithy stories and ancient lore round out the duo’s personable performance style. Both Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved, sung and researched folk music since childhood. Julia Lane's interest in the sources of J.R.R.Tolkien's writing and Celtic music led her to study in Oxford, England. She has won several international folk harp coÈmpetitions where she was praised for her "innovative arrangements and energetic performance" and it was declared "she really captured the spirit of the music". Fred Gosbee grew up with traditional songs and tunes from his Canadian grandparents being played at home in central Maine. He then studied folklore at the University of Maine under Dr. Sandy Ives. He also designs and builds instruments including folk harps.
